Alundum extraction thimbles are for all kinds of extractions, except strong alkalis. They remain constant in weight. Extracted residue can be removed by ignition. Alundum material will withstand temperatures up to 1450° C. The 70 x 25mm thimble (E1600-4) is used in ASTM D473 test for fuel oil sediment by extraction.

Cellulose extraction thimbles are produced from high quality alpha cellulose cotton linter and have excellent mechanical strength and retention. Standard single thickness thimbles have a wall thickness of approximately 1 mm (10 µm nominal particle retention). These thimbles are used in Soxhlet extraction units providing a safe, convenient and efficient method of solvent extraction of solids and semi-solids. Soxhlet extraction is a widely used technique for the analysis of fats or pesticides in foods and soil materials and many other procedures that involve a solid-liquid extraction.

Cellulose extraction thimbles are produced from high quality alpha cellulose cotton linter and have excellent mechanical strength and retention. Double thickness thimbles have a wall thickness of approximately 2 mm (6µm nominal particle retention) for applications where higher retention and increased wet or dry strength or rigidity is required. These thimbles are used in Soxhlet extraction units providing a safe, convenient and efficient method of solvent extraction of solids and semi-solids.

High purity glass microfiber thimbles manufactured from 100% pure borosilicate glass are available for specialized applications. The thimbles are completely free of binders or additives and can be used at temperatures up to 500° C or when using solvents incompatible with cellulose thimbles. These thimbles are also used in pollution monitoring techniques (0.8 µm nominal particle retention). Typical thickness 1.7 mm. Applications include: smoke stack gas monitoring, Soxhlet extraction, analyzing pesticide residues, determining oil/fat content of foods, analysis of oil and grease in solid wastes.

Ahlstrom's high purity cellulose extraction thimbles are most commonly used in Soxhlet extraction units for the separation of individual components from a mixture of solids and semi-solids by solvent extraction. The use of a Soxhlet extractor provides a safe method of extraction with toxic or other noxious solvents. Ahlstrom extraction thimbles are recommended for the estimation of fats in food, analysis of lacquer and binder in paints, vitamin A and carotene extractions, and extraction of organic compounds from reaction mixtures.

These PYREX® fritted extraction thimbles are designed for use in PYREX® Soxhlet extractors when it is desirable to weigh the material extracted or where paper thimbles may be attacked by the chemicals used.
